Meet Lyza, Cadet Leader and Community Safety Volunteer |
As part of volunteers week, we’re shining a spotlight on Lyza Williamson – a Community Safety Volunteer who gives her time to help keep communities across Humberside safer.
Supporting policing in the community Lyza is a Police Cadet Leader, teaching and mentoring young people in Beverley about all areas of policing from how our Force Control Room operates to the role of Neighbourhood Policing officers. Cadets don’t just learn what the police do, but also learn why, gaining an insight into how officers make decisions in the most high pressure circumstances, taking part in team building exercises and exploring all different departments across the force. As a volunteer Lyza also supports the development of officers preparing for the front line, taking part in training exercises to challenge and stretch trainee constables and detectives. Beyond Policing Lyza also volunteers with the Fire Service, promoting water and fire safety in the community often engaging with young people with a focus on the dangers of open water. In addition to this Lyza gives time to the NHS, championing the importance of community care and early support. Why she does it? We asked Lyza why she volunteers and she said: “The truth is I didn’t ‘become’ a volunteer - I grew into it. "Volunteering became the place where my skills, empathy and sense of duty aligned. I volunteer because I believe in strengthening and supporting my community. "I love the sense of purpose and connection that comes from supporting policing in the community. Working with young people through the Cadets gives me the chance to mentor, guide and inspire the next generation. I enjoy representing policing values, building trust with the public and helping create safer spaces for everyone” This volunteers week we are giving thanks to Lyza and all our volunteers for their incredible dedication and immense efforts that they kindly give and continue to give to policing.
